- Time and location: 4:45 - 5:45 PM in Pyon Su Room in Stamp Student Union
- Content: Microfinance: A powerful tool for poverty alleviation! Jerry Grossman is a legal and regulatory microfinance specialist at the IRIS Center at UMD, Department of Economics. He will speak on his career in the exciting field of microfinance, which involves providing financial services for poor people in developing countries. As a Peace Corps volunteer in the Phillipines, he initiated and managed microfinance-supported livelihood projects for farmers.

- The past and future of the field of Microfinance
- Jerry Grossman’s own past and current work
- Resources to learn more about the field

Tuesday, September 25th: IEFS BBQ : First General Body Meeting of the Semester |
- Time and location: 5 - 6:30 PM VMH Courtyard
- Content: Join old and new IEFS members at a BBQ in Van Munching Hall Courtyard to learn about the organization and what we have planned for the semester, get to know one another, and eat delicious food! Applications are online and can be turned in at this meeting.

Wednesday, October 3rd: Food and Friends Community Service Event |
- Time and location: 5:30 - 8 PM, Meet at the Front Entrance of VMH
- Content: Community service event with Food and Friends. Food and Friends is a volunteer-based organization, and each dollar goes farther because of volunteers' contributions of time and effort. Sunday, October 21st: Fundraising Day at the Redskin's Game |
- Time and location: 9:45 AM in the parking lot behind Van Munching
- Transportation: We'll get there through car pool. If you're willing to drive, let us know!!
- Content: At this Redskin's Game, we will be selling beer and making profit that way. We need as many people as possible to sign up. Everyone must be at least 18 years old. Please notify Ami if you can and are willing to drive. The game is at 1 pm so we have to arrive by 10:45 am at Redskins Stadium. We will meet in the parking lot behind VMH at 9:45 am, get situated and then go. We make 10% profit and sell until the end of the third quarter. It will require some effort, but this fundraiser will be a lot of fun and a great way to meet the members of IEFS, get involved, and fulfill one of the IEFS membership requirements in a not so rigid environment. Sign up and help out!

Thursday, October 25th: Professional Event: Daniel Griswold of the Cato Institute |
- Time and location: 5:30 - 6:30 PM Nanticoke Rm (1238) in Stamp Student Union
- Content: The mission of the Cato Institute Center for Trade Policy Studies is to increase public understanding of the benefits of free trade and the costs of protectionism. Daniel T. Griswold is director of the Cato Institute's Center for Trade Policy Studies. Since joining Cato in 1997, he has authored or coauthored major studies on globalization, the World Trade Organization, the U.S. trade deficit, trade and democracy, immigration and other subjects. - More about the Speaker: Griswold's October 2002 paper Willing Workers: Fixing the Problem of Illegal Mexican Migration to the United States was used in the Flake-Kolbe-McCain immigration bill in 2003, which President Bush drew upon in early 2004 as the basis for his guest worker program. Griswold has testified before congressional committees and federal agencies on immigration, the trade deficit, steel trade, and the costs of protectionism. He holds a M.Sc. in the politics of the world economy from the London School of Economics.
