Tuesday, May 9th: Latin America Round Table
  • Time and location: 5 - 6:30 PM, VMH1524
  • Content: Central America Roundtable on DR-CAFTA.

    A discussion on the trade and socio-economic implications of the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement.  

    Event Chair:  Dr. I. M. Destler Professor; Director, Ph.D. Program; Director, Program on International Security and Economic Policy; Senior Fellow, Center for International and Security Policy at Maryland (CISSM)

    Panelist:  Mr. Werner Romero is the Counselor for Economic Affairs for the Embassy of the Republic of El Salvador  

    Panelist:  Mr. Mauricio Pastora is Interim Representative Minister Counselor at OAS for the Dominican Republic

    Dr. Destler also gave the U.S. perspective on relations with Central America.

Tuesday, February 21st: Career Workshop
  • Time and location: 5 - 6:30 PM, VMH1206
  • Content: This will be a great opportunity to get great advice on skills you will need for the real world:
    • Networking Exercises - how to conduct yourself at networking events to make the best impression.
    • Resume Writing - do's and dont's, how to avoid common mistakes, bring your resume with you.
    • Interviewing - FAQs, how to highlight desired skills, etc.
    • Potbelly's sandwiches will be served!

Tuesday, March 7th: Hot Topics in Business and Economics - Lecture led by Dr. Phillip Swagel
  • Time and location: 5 - 6:30 PM, VMH1307
  • Content: Dr. Swagel has held prominent positions at the White House, Federal Reserve and International Monetary Fund (IMF). This past semester, he taught a second year MBA class on International Finance at the University of Chicago.

    He will be discussing issues dealing with the Dubai Ports Authorities, the U.S. account deficit and its implications to trade and outsourcing. He will also discuss the making of economic policy in the White House and the opportunities available to business/economics students.

    At the conclusion of the lecture he will open the floor to any questions you may have about current issues in the world news. These topics range from AIDS in Africa to the Doha Round Trade negotiations.

    Pizza and refreshments will be served.

  • Content: Chemonics International is a global consulting firm promoting economic growth and higher living standards in developing countries.

    Agnieszka Gnoinska - Professional Development
    James Catto - Field Accounting

    Agnieszka Gnoinska and James Catto will talk about the history of Chemonics including history, structure, culture, and the technical areas worked in. They will also talk about careers and career paths at Chemonics, what they look for in candidates, how to apply, tips/advice/experience to include, what skills are valuable to them.

    They hope to keep their presentation informal and brief, and turning this event into a discussion with the members of IEFS.

Tuesday, April 25th: East Asian Dynamism

  • Content: Dr. Schreurs is a Government and Politics Professor who specializes in Comparitive Politics at the University of Maryland. She is currently writing a book on Environmental Policy in the United States, Japan, China, East Asia, Germany, and the European Union. This fall she will be leading a study abroad program next year to Vietnam, China or Thailand. 

    She will be leading a lecture and discussion on the East Asian Dynamism.
